  • From Manual to Mobile: Oportumundo's Tourism Revolution

Oportumundo revolutionizes how tourists book winery tours, excursions, and unique experiences in Mendoza, Argentina.

Originally a manual reservation system reliant on in-person bookings and social media, Oportumundo transitioned to a user-friendly digital platform, offering a more efficient, local currency-based alternative to foreign booking platforms.

This pesos-focused approach caters to Argentina’s economy, keeping experiences accessible. With expansion plans across Argentina, Oportumundo is positioned as a key tool for both domestic and international tourists.

This case study explores Oportumundo’s journey from concept to full launch, highlighting key design challenges, solutions, and the growth achieved.

Charting a New Course for Mendoza's Tourism

Mendoza’s popular tourist activities (like winery tours, day trips to Aconcagua's base or rafting in Mendoza's biggest rivers) previously required direct reservations, often leading to missed opportunities and limited flexibility.

In 2022, over 3.5 million tourists visited Mendoza, but with limited online options it was difficult for them to secure experiences in advance. Oportumundo aimed to capture a share of this market by filling the digital gap, offering both tourists and providers an accessible booking solution.

Oportumundo was developed to address this gap, but the project faced several significant challenges. The platform needed to be scalable to accommodate increasing demand, user-friendly for a diverse audience ranging from tech-savvy tourists to local businesses with varying technical expertise, and capable of balancing the needs of both user groups (providing convenience for tourists and efficient management tools for providers).

Integrating with existing, and sometimes outdated booking systems used by local businesses also required significant cross-functional collaboration between the design and development teams.

Working with a limited budget and a small team, the project successfully launched an MVP in under three months to meet the immediate market demand.

    Mapping the Digital Landscape

Bringing the design to life was a highly collaborative process, driven by a user-focused approach and a commitment to meeting the needs of both tourists and providers. This involved continuous dialogue and shared problem-solving with the development team.

We began with stakeholder workshops (including winery owners, tour operators, and tourism authorities) to identify key requirements and understand the Mendoza tourism landscape. Using Adobe XD for designs, we focused on creating a simple and engaging booking experience, using rapid prototyping and testing with users to refine features based on user feedback.

Despite time and budget constraints, we launched the MVP in under three months, using the initial user feedback to further refine search and booking functionalities.

Throughout the process, open communication with stakeholders and users ensured quick iterations and a successful launch.

Setting Sail: Bringing the Platform to Life

The implementation process involved an efficient integration between product design and technical execution:

    • Data Integration and Provider Management: We designed a central database with an intuitive dashboard, enabling providers to update listings, availability, and prices easily. This setup encouraged regular platform usage and minimized training needs.

    • Mobile Optimization and Accessibility: Many tourists rely on mobile devices for bookings when traveling, so we prioritized a mobile-first, responsive design. Extensive testing helped us ensure all features were easy to access on mobile, including searching, filtering, booking and even payments.

    • Real-Time Feedback Integration: Using heat maps and tracking user journeys, we identified friction points and adjusted the booking process to ensure smooth transactions. Ongoing feedback allowed us to continuously refine the platform, creating a responsive experience that kept pace with growing demand.

The most difficult and important part of the booking process was definitely payments. Choosing the right payment gateway was crucial. Mercado Pago was the right choice that allowed us integrate payments in just a few days but has been proven to be reliable and secure since the platform was launched.

A Successful Voyage: Reaching New Horizons

Since its initial launch in 2023, Oportumundo has gained momentum through word of mouth and targeted marketing.

In its first year, the platform facilitated around 5,000 bookings, with an average provider retention rate of 50%.

By 2024, bookings have increased by an estimated 20%, with retention growing to 75%.

The number of businesses using the platform has grown by 40%, giving tourists more choices. User surveys show a 90% satisfaction rate with the platform’s ease of use.

These numbers show Oportumundo’s positive impact on Mendoza’s tourism.

The Journey Continues: Expanding the Map

With Mendoza as a foundation, Oportumundo is preparing to expand across Argentina, where 12.9 million Argentinians travel domestically and 3.9 million foreign tourists visit annually. Our next steps involve franchising the platform across provinces, with local representatives managing and promoting offerings regionally. Full expansion across Argentina is projected for 2025.

Oportumundo’s growth showcases the transformative power of user-centered design and rapid iteration. Through careful attention to user needs, the platform is set to become Argentina’s premier tourism booking tool, connecting local businesses and tourists with an easy to use, scalable solution for unforgettable experiences.

    Conclusion

The AccessFan project has achieved its primary goal of validating the market need for a dedicated soccer match ticketing platform. By addressing common pain points such as lack of transparency, limited availability, and complex interfaces, AccessFan has built a reliable and user-friendly service that resonates with its target audience.

The successful user tests and positive feedback confirm the effectiveness of the design and implementation strategies employed. However, users have also highlighted areas for improvement and additional features, paving the way for the next major project. This future initiative will focus on creating dedicated platforms for individual clubs, integrating e-commerce capabilities, and offering an even richer set of features tailored to enhance the fan experience.

Overall, the AccessFan MVP has laid a solid foundation for continued growth and innovation, ensuring that the platform evolves to meet and exceed the expectations of its users.
